Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name, and they're always glad you came. You wanna be where you can see, our troubles are all the same, you wanna go where everybody knows your name.

String the Brass

I woke up to the sounds of Adele's, "Someone Like You"  playing in my ear and smiled. Oh, how that song had once gotten me through a rough spot. It was my ringtone sounding, and it was 8:00 in the morning. That wasn't going to happen--way too early. However, it's rude to leave a phone ringing, so I went to pick it up. Ironically the moment I go to do so, the ringer stopped. Whoever it was calling me, must have grown weary and hung up. Oh well.

Whoever it was, if it were that important they would either leave a message or call again. I laid there for a moment, as if I were waiting for something to happen. Eh, who am I kidding? The morning isn't as 'enchanted' as it may seem. It was cold and I refused to get up, yet I couldn't go back to sleep so I just laid there. An hour later, maybe, I fell back asleep and work up again around noon to the sounds of my grandmother and aunt [SCREAMING] loudly as they always do when they talk to each other. It never bothered me before, no idea why it bothered me now. My sisters were in the next room also [SCREAMING]. All I thought to myself was, "and I thought dorm life was loud."

Today, as I saw in many posts on Facebook, the band of the Fighting Irish is heading down south for the bowl game we'll be playing in on Thursday. Oh how, I wish I could go too. This year I actually tried to join the band, if only in a small way. I tried out for manager. It's crazy how one has to audition for something like being a manager, but I suppose it was fair. I had/ have a TON of friends in the band. My decision to tryout for manager wasn't really my decision at all. But I was going to do it. There were three people (me and two other freshman)  but I fitted in with the group almost perfectly. Being at band camp with them, was an absolute blast. I loved marching through campus with approximately 350 other people. I loved the pre-game routine. Everything about the band was so cool. I've always seen music in the light of classical music. This was bringing it to a totally and completely different light. It was a sight.

Like a fool, I claimed the position before it was actually given to me.Well, it back fired. I didn't get the position, it was given to a freshman. Looking back now, I almost see mine not getting it as a blessing in disguise. I'm a double major in music and biology. Music: That's what a band is. Settling for a managerial position in a band would have been just that, settling. After getting out of my slump of not getting the position, I officially made up in my mind that I wanted to learn a brass instrument and try out for band next year. You'd be surprised how much you learn the week of band camp. It's almost like I have an upper hand. Not only do I have a ton of friends in the band, but I know the band directors and they know me. The actually acknowledge my presence whenever they see me at games and whatnot. Imagine that.

I know how things work. If someone who knew nothing about music but thought the band was 'cool' could do it, so could I. A music composition major. A member of the symphony orchestra. A violinist. I could do it. There are so many people rooting for me to do so. I have a friend who is a cellist, yet she plays falto in the band. Now more than ever I want to and I'm going to. Reading all of the posts on Facebook made that more apparent for me. All I kept thinking to myself was, "next year."
